Happy December to you all! Once again, I am a little late in writing this but with this, the final month of the year 2010 and the Christmas holiday coming up, it is good time to begin to reflect on the successes and failures of your life, and the potential for improvement in the upcoming new year. December is the last of seven months months out of the year that has 31 days within it. It is also the month where the nations in the Northern Hemisphere experience the shortest daylight hours of the year, while nations in the Southern Hemisphere have the longest daylight hours.
Well...without further delay, here are some noticeable events in history that has occurred on December 1.
- 1885: in the United States, the soft drink Dr. Pepper was first served in a drug store in Waco, Texas.
- 1913: in Argentina, the Buenos Aires Subway begins operation, making it the first underground railway system in Latin America.
- 1919: in England, Lady Nancy Astor takes her seat as a conservative in the House of Common, making her the first female Member of Parliament.
- 1941: in the United States, New York Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia issues Administrative Order 9, which created the Civilian Air Patrol.
- 1958: in the United States, a fire at the Our Lady of Angels elementary school kills 92 students and 3 nuns.
- 1965: in India, the Border Security Force is established to guard national borders and to prevent transnational crime.
- 1969: in the United States, the Selective Service System held a lottery to determine the order of drafting young men into the Army for the Vietnam War.
- 1974: in the United States, passenger airliner TWA Flight 514 crashed into Mt. Weather in Virginia, killing all 92 people on board.
- 1989: in the Philippines, a coup d’etat against President Corazon Aquino’s government was initiated by the Reform the Armed Forces Movement, resulting in Aquino’s victory after 9 days of violence.
